Performance – Saturday 18th May 2024

Hey there. It’s been a while. A very long while. Not that I haven’t had anything to say. Quite the opposite actually.

So, yeah. This is happening.

https://www.siobhandavies.com/events/mearchivingme/

So yeah, last year in January, I applied for the Artist Archive at Siobhan Davies Studios. Not thinking that I would ever get it. And of course as these stories go, I did.
So here we are with just a few weeks to go. Propa full on.

Was meant to have been at the end of ’23, but that was never going to happen as I had way too much stuff to sort through. So now I’m doing the do in May. Saturday 18th May from…well…yeah evening time.

What’s it all about?

It’s all about me. Lil’ ole me. Moi. Io. Jag. Mwé.

mearchivingme is an anthology of Angela’s works and career. Sometimes ordered. Sometimes not. But there. A collection of objects, images, costumes creating a landscape to explore.”

That part.

Hope you can make it. 🙂 You can get your tickets here

Too Black if I do, too Blac

k if I don’t

So.

I started my classes properly last Monday. What I mean by properly is that I advertised them openly. In November leading up to Christmas I did a six-week stint for my regulars who kept connected during the pandemic. It’s going to cost me, well more like it will break-even if I don’t pay myself!!! Most small business owners know this. But I’ve decided to continue. The reason I am ‘going it alone’ is because I don’t have a choice. I don’t believe I’ve been given a choice. I’ve been deprived of choices.

Oh poor me. #victim

To say I’m different is well…true. Continue reading

Sorting out my coin vase.

During the period of mourning I learned about the #konmarie method of decluttering.  I even started my show, Radical Integration (2018) with it. It helped so much with separating what were my feelings and what were other’s projections.  I also found that the process of sorting helped me to channel pain that was out of my control. Pain that was hurting me pretty badly, yet was unintentional stricken.  Pain which I had to learn how to describe succinctly whilst being asked to take care of other’s feelings.

So, this is what I do.

Some background…

In October 2018 I was one of two successful bids for “Collaboration Between Generations” commission by CDS with a generous donation from The Choreographer’s Gallery Trust.  The funding enabled me to travel to Switzerland and work with Othella Dallas, a principal dancer of the Katherine Dunham Company in the 1940s.  Continue reading

Ode to a GREAT day

Ode to a GREAT day

Had a great day today!

The average of the day was great I mean.

Started of a bit “blurgh”; (1)

then rose to a fairly good “yeah”; (2)

then took a little bit of a “hmmm”; (3)

which unfortunately took the shine off the second “yeah”; (4)

a “yep” followed by a silent smiling “cool”; (5)

preceded a “uh-huh”; (6)

that cushioned a sinking “oh”; (7)

that steadied at a positive “ah”; (8)

which finally came to rest at a “ooooohhh”. (9)

All in all, a great day 😀

Lindy Hop and the culture of race relations

Today, Tuesday 21st July 2015, a repeat behaviour pinged at me on my phone.  I looked at the email.  It hurt.  It hurt so deep that’s why I’m writing this blog post now.

I’m not going to say what I saw, because it will only give airtime to the (IMHO) bad behaviour.  So instead I’m going to ask “Why?”.

I’m probably a bit too old to still hold onto that question “Why?”.  Why is really not the question to ask, but I still ask it because I would like to understand.  Maybe there is another way of getting at “the truth”.

FREE Lindy Hop Taster Workshop and Dance at Chisenhale Dance Space Sat 4th Oct

Chisenhale Fun Palace

An afternoon of Lindy Hop / Swing Dance at Chisenhale Dance Space. The event is part of the FunPalaces weekend 4th-5th October.

Come along and learn the basics of Lindy Hop, followed by an hour of social dancing at the Swing Disco where you can show off your new moves. You don’t need to come with a partner, just turn up and let the music take hold of you.

The whole event is FREE, so you only need to bring your smile, some laughter and a pair of comfortable shoes.

Leon James and Willa Mae Ricker

Lindy Hop is danced to Big Band Swing music of the 1940’s. It has regained popularity in the last couple of decade, and you can dance the Lindy Hop all over the world where communities have grown and grown. In London, the scene is very developed so if this taster class whets your appetite then you are sure to find classes near you.

The Lindy Hop / Swing is the forebear to many of the street-dances we see today including Break-dance and Hip Hop of which film evidence show the links-origins.

Your teacher will be Angela Andrew – one of the leading teachers in the international scene. Angela is renowned for her explosive energy and improvisational skills on the dance floor. She has worked with many of the great masters of Lindy Hop and Vernacular Jazz Dance and has been fondly described as the “next generation” by veteran jazz dancers. Angela has recently returned from New York where she performed at the world famous Apollo Theater in the show “Swingin’ Frankie’s Way” directed by Chester Whitmore as part of the Frankie100 celebrations.

You can see Angela dancing here as part of the “Classics Club”
